On July 1, 1992 the USEPA changed the law making it illegal to vent CFCs (freon) into the air.  Any appliance that cools probably contains CFCs (freon) including refrigerators, freezers, vending machines, and air conditioners just to name a few.

You can’t just throw it away!

Not only can’t you just throw these items away, you can’t allow or cause (knowingly break lines) the release of freon!

The EPA can fine you up to $37,500 and

put you in jail if you do!

Before Lemont Scrap Processing can purchase a cooling unit of any kind from you as scrap (i.e., refrigerator, air conditioning unit, vending machine), all CFCs (freon) must be removed and recovered. 

You must sign a certification stating that the freon has been removed and recovered or that due to the age and condition of the appliance there is no more freon in it.

Call your public works department or your local home appliance retailers to see if they can properly remove the freon from the appliance before you bring it to us. 

DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THE FREON YOURSELF!
